Osteoporosis in Europe: Self Reported Prevalence, Treatment and Medication

Results from the TNS European Healthcare Panel (EHP)

  • Self-reported osteoporosis varies from 1.8 percent in the UK until 4.0 percent in Italy for both men and women aged 18 to 69 years. Whereas in the UK, the Netherlands and Germany the men to women ratio is about 2 to 8, in France and in Italy the respective ratio is 1 to 9.
  • The incidence of osteoporosis is rapidly increasing at the onset of age 55 years; individuals aged 55 to 69 years are three or in some countries even four times as often suffering from osteoporosis as individuals aged 40 to 54 years. The data look pretty much the same as in “Eurobarometer”, where especially older women in Italy seem to have a significantly higher prevalence rate than the same age group in the UK with the lowest prevalence rate.
  • Self-reported morbidity in absolute numbers is (in millions) 0.3 in NL, 0.75 in UK, 1.1 in France, 1.2 in Germany, and 1.6 in Italy (population aged 18 to 69 years).
